Sago palm trees make an ideal indoor plant or a plant for a landscaped garden, it is easy to grow and care for, its upright trunk can be anything from 1” up to 12” in diameter depending on the age and it has highly decorative feather like leaves which grow in a circular pattern around the trunk
The sago palm (Cycas Revoluta) is of S.East Asian origin, and has been used for decorative purposes for many centuries.
The palm readily adapts to a wide range of temperatures, and if treated with proper maintenance, like keeping the surroundings moist, removing dead leaves, the plant, especially the outdoor variety can live for many years. Indeed there is a sago palm in the Kew Gardens in the UK which is 220 years old.
The leaves of the sago palm emerge in a circular patter and need about 6 weeks for them to harden, the lower the light the longer the leaf will grow, the brighter the light the shorter the growth. If the new plant is indoors it is best to rotate the plant whilst the leaves are hardening to prevent them leaning in one direction.
The plant is highly decorative either in the house or in the garden, but it contains the toxin cycasin, and the red colored seeds of the sago palm are highly poisonous to humans and pets.
If domestic pets have eaten any part of the plant especially the seeds then they may experience foaming and frothing at the mouth, high excitability and if not treated the damage from the poison can result in both liver and neurological damage.
In humans the ingestion of the toxin can cause seizures, coma and maybe death
